Rose Water Fruit Salad

A simple fruit salad can be made special by the addition of a bit of rose water. Rose water is made by steeping rose petals in water and originates in Iran and India. It has a wonderful smell of roses. Berries you buy in the supermarket are sometimes a touch underripe, so a bit of honey helps to correct the sweetness.

Ingredients

For 4 servings

250 grams (2 cups) blueberries

250 grams (2 cups) raspberries

250 grams (2 cups) blackberries

4 Tbsp (60 ml, 1/4 cup) rose water

1 Tbsp honey

Instructions

Carefully rinse and dry the fruit, and combine in a large bowl.

Sprinkle with rose water…

…and drizzle with honey.

Stir and allow to macerate for about an hour (can be made in advance, refrigerate until about an hour before serving), stirring a couple of times and just before serving to distribute the rose water evenly.

Serve just like that, nothing else is needed.

Wine pairing

This is amazing with Rosenmuskateller (Moscato Rosa), a rare dessert wine that smells like roses from Südtirol (Alto Adige) in North-East Italy. If you can’t find Rosenmuskateller, a reasonable alternative is black muscat from California (Quady Winery). This grape variety (which is also called muscat of Hamburg) is related to moscato rosa and sometimes smells a bit of roses, too, but not as much as the real thing.

Flashback

Mackerel marinated in a tart marinade with sweet onions. This preparation is very easy and perfect for summer, as it is served cold. It is a simplified version of a Venetian recipe called pesce in saor, because the mackerel is cooked in the hot marinade and fewer ingredients are used.

  1. very good. I use it often too.
Rose and orange water are always in my cupboard and I use them often. especially in summer over fruits salads, as u did. I also favour rose water over peaches and rasp. and melon and rasp. It is rather intoxicating and it gives a nice exotic flavor to the most basic ingredients.
